The future of global fellowships
Global fellowships are a powerful way to strengthen capacity to tackle AMR – but access and impact remain uneven. One of the Fleming Initiative’s core areas of work is to improve how AMR fellowships are designed and delivered, with a focus on equity, local leadership, and long-term impact.
By starting with a focus on the intended end impact, and what happens to individuals after their respective fellowship programmes, we connect alumni into this wider fellowship ecosystem – linking experience, expertise, and leadership to future opportunities.
Our mission is clear: to create and develop a robust network of multi-sector, multidisciplinary, and multi-professional people dedicated to tackling antimicrobial resistance through coordinated and innovative efforts. The first step in this journey is to establish an alumni network that brings together fellows from various programmes, starting with the Fleming Fund Fellowship alumni.

A nurturing platform
The Fleming Initiative will maintain and grow an alumni network as a global community of practice for AMR and One Health professionals alongside wider communities of post-fellowship professionals. We will support alumni with:
-
Structured communications with centralised information sharing, and regular meetings and newsletters.
-
Networking events, webinars, workshops, as well as peer-to-peer mentorship programmes and regional dialogue fora.
-
Targeted training sessions, online courses, and leadership development programmes through collaboration with our partnership with the Centres for Antimicrobial Optimisation Network (CAMO-Net) and Amp Health, as well as with input from alumni network on local/regional needs.
-
Opportunities to participate in AMR Masterclass series supported by global leaders.
-
Mentorship and partnership schemes that build communities of practice beyond local/national connections.
-
Opportunities for joint research projects, policy dialogues, and innovation hubs.
-
Connection with CAMO-Net and other regional networks for collaboration on regional AMR strategies.
As we grow, we also envision future opportunities for:
-
Travel grants and off-site placement schemes.
-
Funded participation in key regional, national, and international events and forums.
We will also draw on alumni experience and regional expertise to support the development of:
-
Resilience fellowships, which strengthen AMR systems and leadership over the long term
-
Responsive fellowships, which address specific needs, priorities, or emerging challenges
Alumni can contribute to the design of these fellowships as well as benefit from continued professional development, supported by a shared learning and knowledge platform.

Carrying forward the Fleming Fund Fellowship legacy
Following the UK Government’s decision to close the Fleming Fund programme, the Fleming Initiative is excited to become the home for Fleming Fund Fellowship alumni – a network to ensure the long-term impact of a globally recognised antimicrobial resistance (AMR) capacity-strengthening programme.
It is essential that the alumni – leaders, practitioners, and researchers – remain at the forefront of national AMR action plans and One Health efforts worldwide. The Fleming Initiative recognises the importance of this, and is offering an independent, long-term home for this community, enabling alumni to stay connected, continue learning, and extend their impact.
