Meet our Julia Anderson Trainees in Behavioural Science

Jack Cooper

The Julia Anderson Training Programme is a scheme at the Institute of Global Health Innovation (IGHI) that offers paid work experience to people who have no, or limited, prior work experience.

The Julia Anderson Training Programme specifically seeks people who have limited work experience at a university or organisation related to health, science, technology or business management.

By joining the programme, trainees will have the chance to support impactful programmes of work at the Institute in a diverse range of areas, from health policy to data analytics, enabling them to develop useful and applicable workplace skills and knowledge that will kick-start their career path.

The Fleming Initiative, a Centre of Excellence within IGHI, is delighted to welcome two Julia Anderson Trainees in Behavioural Science: Arlette Albert and Caitlin Murphy.

During their 12 weeks with us, Arlette and Caitlin will be working on a project exploring the public's thoughts on how they should be taking antibiotics and what the phrase "take exactly as prescribed" means to them. They hope to better understand why individuals might misuse antibiotics, such as not finishing the course or sharing with family members.

They will use insights from focus groups with public members to co-design interventions that improve antibiotic stewardship, which we hope to test in an online randomised controlled trial in the future.

Meet Arlette Albert

I am currently a second-year Psychology BSc student at King’s College London pursuing a career in healthcare. I have clinical and research interests, particularly in the areas of neuropsychology, psychosomatic medicine, and public health. As I progress in my academic and professional journey, I am pursuing multidisciplinary opportunities (like the Julia Anderson Training Programme) to broaden my interests and skillset.

Working on the Fleming Initiative will help me develop skills in research, patient engagement, and co-designing interventions. I am honoured and excited to be part of such an impactful project that will mitigate AMR, one of the world's most pressing issues. There is such a range of experts at IGHI, all of which are facilitating incredibly innovative projects that I can't wait to learn from!

Meet Caitlin Murphy

Last summer, I graduated with a BSc in Psychology from the University of Chichester. During my studies, I developed a keen interest in neuropsychology and enjoyed exploring the factors that influence human behaviour. I am thrilled to begin my internship at IGHI with Fleming Initiative and to work towards breaking down the behavioural barriers that pose a threat to antimicrobial resistance. This opportunity is a great step towards my future goals of conducting research in health, and I am excited to spend the next few months working with and getting to know such an incredible team!
