In March 2024, the Fleming Initiative and Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO,  launched an exciting new award to recognise the inspiring work of innovators around the world in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Today we are pleased to announce the opening of the individual nomination process.

The Trailblazers in AMR programme aims to raise awareness and support pioneering efforts to tackle AMR, one of the greatest public health threats.

AMR impacts multiple sectors, geographies, fields and people, making solutions hard to achieve. Trailblazers are helping to deliver impact across this spectrum, from policy and R&D to engagement and economics.

Inspired by the substantial contributions of women across science, this year’s award will focus on female Trailblazers and has already garnered significant interest globally.

Earlier this year, several leading international organisations - including CARB-X, the One Health Trust, Access to Medicine Foundation and LifeArc - were invited to submit nominations. However, given the impactful work happening across the world, the Fleming Initiative and CSIRO are expanding the selection process to include self-nominations.

We invite individuals who feel their work, or the work of their colleagues, is driving the necessary changes in AMR to put forward their nominations here by June 1st 2025.

We welcome nominations from across the globe and from all sectors including science, education, arts, and economics.

The achievements of the Trailblazers will be celebrated and showcased at a leading international AMR conference set to take place in Australia during February 2026. They will also be amplified through prominent profiles on a dedicated section of the Fleming Initiative website. These profiles will highlight the Trailblazers' diverse expertise and contributions to minimising the impact of AMR and provide opportunities for them to connect with fellow experts, potential collaborators, and a global audience.

Professor Dame Sally Davies, the UK Special Envoy on AMR, is the patron of the inaugural Trailblazers in AMR initiative.

“I am inspired by the leadership of women all across the world who are tackling AMR with their expertise, innovation and dedication,” Professor Davies said.

“By celebrating and showcasing their efforts, I hope the next generation is inspired to take action against AMR.”

Nominations are open now. Successful recipients will be announced in Q4, 2025.
